You do  not have to attend a traditional court reporting school to become certified to work as a court reporter in California.  The requirement for court reporting in California is: If you do not train through a traditional court reporting school in California, you must first pass the National Court Reporters Association's RPR examination to illustrate to the California Court Reporting Board that you have achieved a similar level of training as though you had graduated from a court reporting school in California.  Passing the RPR will qualify you to take the California CSR, for court reporters, exam which is a requirement for all students regardless of where they trained.  Below is the California Court Reporters Board's website, so you may visit that website and learn about the legal requirements in your state and how the court reporting exam is administered.   You will notice on the website page below under 1(c) that the RPR Certificate is acceptable for eligibility to take the exam.

The California CSR exam consists of a written knowledge test covering academics as well as a skills test consisting of a 10-minute test at 200 wpm dictated in four voices.
